Teaching
Fetch
All dogs love to chase after moving objects and try to catch them,
the Cocker is no exception, however there is a big difference in
chasing and catching something and then bringing the object to you.
In training the puppy to Fetch you will have to overcome its natural
tendency to keep the item it has just caught, sometimes the puppy
will bring it to you but not want to part with it, a fair exchange
for a nice treat may work (if you're lucky).
To start the training go into your garden or yard (somewhere without
distractions) take a ball or something similar, stand still and show
this to your puppy, he should be curious enough to come over to you,
when he does give the Sit command, make a big show by waving the
object in front of him to catch his attention, now say Fetch
and throw it a short distance away, 10 -15 feet, the puppy
will run after it and get it, now kneel down and encourage him to
bring it to you, when he does give lots of praise and a treat.
Keep repeating the exercise for maybe 4-5 times then take away the
item completely and move onto another exercise or perhaps take him
for a walk.As you progress with the training increase throwing
distance, always praise but reduce or stop the treats.
Depending on the age and intelligence of your puppy you may have to
do this exercise every day for a few weeks. Do not use the
same item to practice with every day, the puppy with assume
only this item is a Fetch item and just keep anything that is
different.
When you are confident that your puppy will return with the just
thrown item change it and throw something different each time.
By the end of the training period you should be able to throw
anything and say Fetch
and the puppy will get it and bring it to you.
